Product Description
The reliability of expansion joints is determined by design, manufacturing, installation, and operational management, and must be considered from these perspectives. When selecting bellows for heating networks, material choice should account not only for operating temperature, working medium, and external environment, but also for the effects of water treatment chemicals, potential stress corrosion, and pipeline cleaning agents on the material. Based on this, an economically viable bellows material should be optimized by balancing cost-effectiveness with weldability and formability.
Generally, bellows materials should meet the following criteria: 1. High tensile strength, elasticity, and fatigue resistance to ensure normal operation. 2. Good plasticity for easy forming, with sufficient hardness and strength achievable through subsequent processing. 3. Excellent corrosion resistance to withstand diverse environmental conditions. 4. Superior weldability to meet manufacturing requirements. For thermal pipelines laid in trenches, when the expansion joint is located in a lower section of the pipeline, the bellows may be exposed to rainwater or accidental sewage immersion. Therefore, materials with superior corrosion resistance, such as iron-nickel alloys or high-nickel alloys, should be considered. During bellows manufacturing, it may be feasible to apply a corrosion-resistant alloy coating only to surfaces directly exposed to corrosive media, as these materials carry a higher cost.
Fatigue Life Design Analysis of failure modes and causes in bellows expansion joints reveals that both circumferential/planar stability and corrosion resistance are linked to displacement—i.e., fatigue life. Insufficient fatigue life compromises corrosion resistance and stability. Based on testing and application experience, the fatigue life of bellows used in heating engineering should not be less than 1000 cycles. Bellows cannot bear loads and must be hoisted separately. Except for design requirements involving pre-stretching or cold-tight pre-deformation, it is strictly prohibited to use bellows deformation to compensate for pipeline installation deviations. During installation, weld slag must not be splashed onto the bellows surface, nor should it suffer other mechanical damage. All moving components of the bellows must not be obstructed by external parts or restricted in their normal operation.
Most bellows failures are caused by external environmental corrosion. Contact between external corrosive media and the bellows can be considered when designing the expansion joint structure. A packing seal device can be added between the outlet flange and outlet pipe. For expansion joints, such as sleeve expansion joints, this not only provides an additional barrier for the bellows expansion joint but also resists the intrusion of external corrosive media. Even if the bellows are damaged, the expansion joint can still perform its compensating function, preventing bellows failure. Expansion joints include non-metallic compensators and metallic compensators. Depending on the specific application and medium, they can also be categorized as high-temperature resistant compensators and specialized anti-corrosion compensators.
