Classification of Metal Expansion Joints

① U-Bend Expansion Joint

This type involves bending the pipe into a U-shape or other forms, also known as a tension bend. It utilizes the elastic deformation capacity of the shape for compensation. Its advantages include high strength, long service life, and on-site fabrication capability. Disadvantages are its large space requirement, high steel consumption, and significant frictional resistance. This expansion joint is widely used in various steam pipelines and long pipelines.

② Bellows Expansion Joint

A bellows expansion joint is constructed from a metal bellows. It can expand and contract along the pipeline's axial direction and also permits slight bending. Common axial bellows expansion joints are used for axial length compensation in pipelines. To prevent exceeding the allowable compensation range, protective tie rods or rings are installed at both ends of the bellows, and guide brackets are fitted on the connected pipeline sections. Additionally, angular and lateral expansion joints compensate for pipe angular and lateral deformations. These types offer advantages in space savings, material efficiency, and suitability for standardization and mass production, though they have a relatively shorter service life. Bellows expansion joints are typically used in pipelines with moderate temperature and pressure conditions and shorter lengths. With advancements in bellows manufacturing technology, their application scope is expanding. Currently, bellows expansion joints can be employed in piping systems with maximum pressures up to 6.0 MPa.

③ Sleeve Expansion Joint

Sleeve expansion joints consist of inner and outer sleeves capable of axial relative movement. A gland packing seal is used between the sleeves. During operation, the two pipe ends must remain aligned along a single axis. The product primarily consists of a sleeve (inner tube), outer casing, and sealing materials. It compensates for axial expansion and contraction of pipelines, as well as axial rotation at any angle. Characterized by its compact size and high compensation capacity, it is suitable for hot water, steam, and oil-based media. Thermal expansion is compensated through the sliding motion of the inner sleeve within the outer sleeve.

The inner sleeve connects to the pipeline, employing a high-performance self-pressurized dynamic seal principle and structure. It freely slides within the outer shell in response to pipeline expansion/contraction, accommodating any pipeline sealing requirements. The outer shell and inner sleeve are sealed with a new synthetic material that resists high temperatures, corrosion, and aging. It operates effectively between -40°C and 150°C, and can reach 350°C under special conditions. This design ensures both axial sliding and prevents leakage of the medium inside the pipe.
