Product Description
Corrugated metal expansion joints, regardless of their structure or installation configuration, are designed to compensate for relative displacement between two fixed supports in a pipeline. Only one corrugated expansion joint is permitted between two fixed supports; otherwise, the expansion joint's compensation value becomes indeterminate. The primary fixed support for the compensator must withstand the combined forces exerted by pipeline thrust, internal medium pressure, elastic forces, friction, weight, and wind loads under operational conditions.
For buried pipelines with elbow-direction lengths less than 30D or pipe diameters exceeding 325mm, fixed supports and fully balanced bellows expansion joints must be installed. The primary fixed supports on both sides of the compensator need only bear the elastic force and friction force on the fixed support, but must not be mixed with incompletely balanced bellows expansion joints. If mixed use is unavoidable, both primary fixed supports must be designed based on internal pressure thrust, i.e., accounting for blind flange force. For bellows expansion joints accommodating axial displacement (except pressure-balanced types), intermediate fixed supports and main fixed supports should be installed at the blind end of the pipeline. When forces at the second end of the pipeline are fully symmetrical or pressure and thrust are entirely borne by the expansion joint, branch pipes with expansion joints enter the main pipe. Pressure and thrust for large tie-rod expansion joints and angular expansion joints are borne by tie rods and hinges.
If conducting a full-system hydrostatic test on the compensator pipeline, reinforce the secondary fixed pipe supports at the end of the pipeline section containing the bellows expansion joint. To prevent pipeline movement or rotation, verify that the fixed supports at both ends of the pipe section compensated by the bellows expansion joint are securely welded to the pipeline and pressure-bearing components as per design requirements. Confirm that the main fixed supports are designed to withstand 1.5 times the internal pressure thrust load.
If supports or pipe sections are unfixed, or if support load-bearing capacity is insufficient, hydraulic testing must not proceed. Otherwise, the corrugated compensator may be damaged by internal pressure thrust. Auxiliary components on the corrugated expansion joint cannot be considered substitutes for fixed devices in bearing internal pressure thrust. Due to the presence of minor unbalanced forces within the pressure-balanced corrugated expansion joint, fixed support requirements can be designed based on factors such as the corrugated pipe's pressure thrust, friction, and rebound force.
