Product Description
For instance, in high-pressure piping systems with curved sections, the use of unconstrained expansion joints can cause significant deflection deformation due to pressure and thrust forces, leading to excessive deformation and failure of the bellows.
In pipeline systems with stringent pressure drop requirements, artificially adding π-bends and compensating with triple-hinge joints can cause excessive pressure drop. Using single-hinge expansion joints for compensation may fail to achieve the intended compensation. During initial pipeline network design, the selection and configuration of expansion joints must be considered alongside pipeline and support system design to ensure a rational, reliable, and economical pipeline network design.
When preparing to use expansion joints to absorb thermal expansion in piping, the positions of fixed supports must first be determined. By installing fixed supports, any complex piping system can be divided into simple-shaped independent expansion sections (e.g., straight sections, L-shaped sections, Z-shaped sections) for subsequent compensation design.
Key factors influencing the number and placement of fixed supports include: the pipeline system's orientation, the thermal expansion absorbed by a single or group of expansion joints, suitable locations for fixed supports, and the positioning of connected equipment.
Due to the limited torque transmission and absorption capabilities of bellows and expansion joint assemblies, the placement of fixed supports and expansion joints should avoid creating two or more coplanar independent pipe sections. This prevents torsional loads from acting upon the expansion joints.
When calculating pipe section compensation, account for all potential heat sources. Typically, the working medium temperature is the primary source of thermal expansion, but in certain cases, ambient temperatures external to the piping system can also contribute to thermal displacement. Additionally, mechanical displacement—such as stress-induced pipe deformation, foundation settlement, installation errors, equipment vibration, and wind loads—should not be overlooked.
Generally, multiple compensation options exist for each independent expansion joint pipe section. For instance, long straight pipe sections may opt for external-tooth axial expansion joints (reducing intermediate fixed supports); alternatively, they may choose triple-hinged compensation by adding π-bends; or compensate using multiple single-axis expansion joints by adding an intermediate fixed support. Overall cost, spatial constraints, and requirements for stress and fatigue life must be comprehensively considered. After comparing various options, the positions of fixed supports and the form of expansion joints should be determined.
