Expansion joints are commonly referred to as compensators or flexible joints. They consist of a bellows (an elastic element) as the primary working component, along with end tubes, brackets, flanges, guide tubes, and other accessories. Expansion joints are flexible structures installed on vessel shells or pipelines to compensate for additional stresses caused by temperature differences and mechanical vibrations. By utilizing the effective expansion and contraction deformation of their working element—the bellows—they absorb dimensional changes in pipelines, ducts, vessels, etc., resulting from thermal expansion and contraction, or compensate for axial, lateral, and angular displacements in these components.
They are also employed for noise reduction, vibration damping, and in heating systems. To mitigate pipeline deformation or failure caused by thermal elongation or temperature stresses during heating, compensators are installed to offset thermal expansion. This reduces wall stresses and forces exerted on valves or support structures.
As a freely expandable elastic compensating element, expansion joints offer advantages such as excellent operational performance and compact structure, making them widely adopted in chemical, metallurgical, and nuclear industries. Expansion joints used on vessels come in various forms. Regarding corrugation shape, U-shaped expansion joints are most commonly applied, followed by Ω-shaped and C-shaped types. Expansion joints used on pipelines, in terms of structural compensation, are further classified into universal, pressure-balanced, hinged, and universal joint types.
An expansion joint refers to a flexible component capable of compensating for axial deformation. For instance, expansion joints welded onto the shell of a fixed tube sheet heat exchanger possess high axial flexibility and readily deform. This allows them to compensate for thermal expansion differences between the tubes and shell caused by varying wall temperatures, thereby reducing axial loads. Consequently, they minimize thermal stress differences in the tubes, tube sheet, and shell, reducing the risk of strength failure, buckling failure, and tube pull-out failure. Expansion joints come in various types, with common structures including corrugated, ring-welded, and clamp-shell designs. Corrugated expansion joints are the most widely used, while ring-welded expansion joints are suitable for atmospheric or low-pressure applications.
