Thermal expansion and contraction is a natural phenomenon; expansion occurs whenever temperature rises. Equipment generates heat during operation—for instance, the shaft of a large motor heats up and elongates during operation. Therefore, one end must be fixed while the other end must remain free. Otherwise, the elongated shaft could cause the casing to overturn. This issue also arises in thermal pipelines at cement plants.
Installed at ambient temperatures in a cold state, these pipes inevitably experience temperature increases during production due to hot gases, leading to thermal expansion and elongation. Without expansion joints to eliminate or absorb pipe elongation, structural damage or support failure will occur, necessitating sufficient attention.
I. Expansion Joint Load Capacity: 1. As thermal compensation equipment for pipelines, expansion joints can only withstand limited axial loads during operation. Therefore, they must not be installed on curved or easily twisted sections but should be positioned on vertical pipelines. 2. If installed on inclined or horizontal pipelines, install slide rails at both ends of the expansion joint. These rails support the pipeline while ensuring it can slide freely on the supports. 3. During expansion joint installation, maintain its natural state and dimensions. Otherwise, it will affect the expansion compensation capacity under thermal conditions. Therefore, ensure the expansion joint remains free from external forces in its cold state. 4. Expansion compensation capacities vary by expansion joint specifications and models. During design and selection, calculate pipeline expansion based on pipeline length and temperature rise. Select expansion joints with sufficient margin to meet compensation requirements. 5. After completing expansion joint installation and confirming no issues, remove the bolts securing the inner and outer sleeves. Failure to do so will prevent the expansion joint from functioning properly. 6. The expansion sleeve inside the joint has clearance. After installation, fill this space with materials like asbestos that do not impede expansion while also providing thermal insulation.
II. Other Types of Compensation: In the cement industry, this primarily refers to thermal pipeline compensation. Although compressed air pipelines may lack compensation due to small diameters and numerous bends, the pipeline's bending and deformation can effectively serve as compensation. Of course, thermal pipelines for waste heat power generation must also comply with relevant standards, such as installing U-type compensators at specified intervals. Below are several illustrative examples: 1. For steel bridges connecting structures in cement plants, one end can be fixed while the other remains free to ensure flexibility and avoid imposing additional loads on the structure. 2. Platforms on equipment must also account for expansion compensation under special conditions. For instance, when atomized water in humidifier towers runs along walls, the cylinder temperature drops significantly, causing inevitable contraction. If the platform is rigid, it cannot deform accordingly. In severe cases, the platform legs welded to the cylinder may be pulled apart, causing the platform to tilt or even collapse. 3. Tertiary air ducts connected to calciners via expansion joints. Insufficient or failed compensation will directly push the calciner, and intense bending stresses may tear the calciner cylinder. 4. For the preheater and air inlet duct, expansion joints must not be directly installed on the preheater. Due to their poor lateral stiffness, expansion joints are prone to twisting and tearing, causing system issues. Therefore, regardless of the expansion joint type, they must be positioned at appropriate locations.
Although expansion joints are static components and not primary equipment, their safety function should not be underestimated. Other types of compensation mechanisms also play crucial roles; otherwise, structural damage becomes inevitable and warrants sufficient attention.
