In fixed tube sheet heat exchangers, a certain temperature difference exists between the tube bundle and the shell during heat transfer, while the tube sheet, tube bundle, and shell are rigidly connected. When the temperature difference reaches a certain level, excessive differential thermal stress often leads to shell damage or tube bundle bending. Therefore, when differential thermal stress is significant, floating head, U-tube, or gland-type heat exchangers can be selected. However, these heat exchangers are costly. If piping does not require cleaning, fixed tube sheet heat exchangers may still be used, but temperature differential compensation devices such as expansion joints must be installed.
Expansion joints are flexible components installed on the shell of fixed tube sheet heat exchangers. Due to their large axial deflection, small axial forces can produce significant deformation. The deformation difference between the tube bundle and the shell is compensated by this flexible component, thereby reducing the thermal stress between the tube bundle and the shell caused by temperature differences. This also helps prevent the joints between the tube bundle and the tube sheet from being pulled apart. Expansion joints also serve as displacement compensators and vibration absorbers in various industrial equipment, machinery, and piping systems.
The critical component is the bellows (also called corrugated tube). Bellows come in diverse cross-sectional shapes, including flat, omega-shaped, and corrugated types.
Thinner bellows walls enhance elasticity and compensation capacity but reduce pressure tolerance. Corrugated expansion joints typically come in single-layer or multi-layer configurations. Multi-layer walls enhance pressure resistance while maintaining compensation capacity. Compared to single-layer joints, multi-layer corrugated expansion joints offer numerous advantages: thin, layered walls provide greater elasticity, higher sensitivity, stronger compensation capability, superior load-bearing capacity, increased fatigue strength, extended service life, and compact structure. Multi-wave expansion joints can be employed when greater compensation is required.
The compensation capacity of a single-wave expansion joint is determined by its shape, dimensions, and material. For instance, a lower wave height improves pressure resistance but reduces compensation capacity; conversely, a higher wave height and larger wave pitch increase compensation capacity but compromise pressure resistance.
