Expansion joints are flexible structures installed on vessel shells or pipelines to compensate for additional stresses caused by temperature differences and mechanical vibrations. Below are the professional application scales:

1. Cement industry (equipment accessories, process pipelines, waste heat power generation, etc.);

2. Power generation and metallurgical industries;

3. Chemical industry (toxic, hazardous, corrosion-resistant applications, etc.);

4. Heating pipelines (distribution networks, boilers, Northeast China);

5. Transportation pipelines (fire protection, oil, gas, water, etc.);

6. Shipbuilding industry.

Except for pre-tensioning/compression or “cold-tightening” pre-deformation required by design specifications, it is strictly prohibited to utilize bellows deformation to compensate for pipeline installation errors. Doing so may impair the expansion joint's normal function, shorten its service life, and increase loads on the pipeline system, equipment, and support components.

Maintain pipeline neutrality. If alternative methods are unavailable, cut equal-length pipes after laying straight sections and install expansion joints to ensure neutrality.

Before installing expansion joints, verify the type and specifications of the bellows expansion joint and confirm that pipeline support equipment meets design requirements.

For lined expansion joints, ensure the liner orientation aligns with the medium flow direction (install according to the expansion joint's flow direction marking). For planar angular expansion joints, the hinge plane must coincide with the displacement plane.

For expansion joints requiring “cold setting,” auxiliary components used for pre-deformation must be removed after the joint completes its pre-deformation.

Upon completion of pipeline installation, immediately remove auxiliary positioning devices and fasteners used for transportation and maintenance from the expansion joint. Adjust the limiting devices to their normal orientation per design specifications to enable full compensation of the pipeline system under environmental conditions.

Corrugated metal expansion joints, regardless of structure or installation method, compensate for relative displacement between two fixed supports. Only one corrugated expansion joint is permitted between two fixed supports; otherwise, the joint's compensation value becomes indeterminate. The primary fixed support must withstand combined forces from pipeline thrust, internal medium pressure, elastic forces, friction, weight, and wind loads under operational conditions. For buried pipelines where the directional length of the elbow is less than 30D or the pipe diameter exceeds 325mm, fixed supports and fully balanced bellows expansion joints must be installed. The main fixed supports on both sides only bear elastic forces and friction forces but must not be used in combination with incompletely balanced bellows expansion joints. If used together, both main fixed supports must be designed based on internal pressure thrust, meaning blind flange forces must be considered.
