What issues should be paid attention to when installing stainless steel bellows?

As a flexible, pressure-resistant pipe fitting, the stainless steel bellows is installed in liquid transport systems to compensate for relative displacement at the connections between pipes, machinery, and equipment, absorb vibrational energy, and provide damping and noise reduction. It features excellent flexibility, light weight, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, and resistance to both high and low temperatures.

The stiffness of a stainless steel bellows—the load required to produce a unit displacement in a metal bellows or other elastic element—is referred to as the element’s stiffness and is typically denoted by “k.” If the elastic characteristics of the element are nonlinear, the stiffness is no longer constant but varies with increasing load. The stiffness specified in the design calculations for an elastic element is called the nominal (or rated) stiffness; however, this nominal stiffness may differ from the actual measured stiffness of the element, particularly for elastic elements with nonlinear elastic characteristics. It is important to carefully consider which point on the curve the nominal stiffness represents. As a general rule, one should not directly use the values obtained from design calculations but rather employ corrected values derived from testing prototypes. The stiffness tolerance refers to the allowable range of variation in stiffness when a batch of elastic elements is tested. Within the same batch of elastic elements, the stiffness of individual stainless steel bellows can vary, resulting in a certain dispersion range. To ensure consistent component performance, it is necessary to limit this dispersion range of stiffness. For elastic sensing elements, the stiffness tolerance should be limited to within ±5% of the nominal value; for bellows-type elastic elements commonly used in general engineering applications, the stiffness tolerance can be relaxed to within ±50%.

Precautions for Installing Stainless Steel Bellows Tubing

Common issues in the installation of stainless steel bellows:

1. During arc welding operations at the construction site, the surface of the stainless steel corrugated pipe should be kept intact to prevent weld-through and arc burning. It is prohibited to install the stainless steel corrugated pipe in a twisted manner.

2. Stainless steel corrugated pipes shall not be bent at the root of the pipe, nor shall they be subjected to sharp bends. The materials passing through must not corrode the raw materials of the metal corrugated pipe; the chloride ion content in these materials should be ≤ 25 ppm.

3. Strict installation diagrams and correct installation procedures must be followed. Mechanical equipment is prohibited from damaging the flange’s protruding surface.

4. Do not use a steel brush dipped in an effective chlorine cleaning solution to remove waste from stainless steel corrugated tubing.
