A silencer is a common acoustic device designed to prevent sound transmission while allowing airflow to pass through. It’s an important measure for reducing aerodynamic noise. Types of mufflers

A device that fixes porous sound-absorbing materials onto the inner walls of airflow passages or arranges them in a specific pattern within ducts to reduce airflow noise. The sound-absorbing materials and facing layer materials used in silencers should be selected based on the operating conditions in the airflow duct.

By altering the cross-sectional area of the airflow passage or by connecting resonant cavities and branch pipes to the main duct, sound waves are reflected, resonated, or interfered with, thereby achieving noise reduction. This approach is particularly effective for attenuating mid- and low-frequency noise and includes mainly three types of mufflers: expansion chambers, resonant mufflers, and interference-type mufflers.

A composite structure combining an impedance-type silencer and a reactive silencer. It is characterized by high sound attenuation and wide sound attenuation bandwidth. However, the noise reduction calculations are more complex and typically require experimental measurement.

The microperforated panel silencer is a type of silencer made by fixing a metal microperforated panel within an airflow duct (Figure 4). It was developed in the 20th century and the 1960s by Chinese scientists including Ma Dayou and others. Its main advantages include high sound attenuation, wide sound attenuation bandwidth, minimal pressure loss, resistance to high temperatures and brief flame impingement, tolerance to airflow surges, and immunity to moisture.

The flow area is carefully designed according to the magnitude of the jet flow rate, thereby reducing the pressure drop as high-pressure gas passes through the throttling orifice plate. For fan silencers, to minimize the impact of mechanical vibrations on the silencer, the silencer should not be directly connected to the fan outlet; instead, an intermediate pipe should be added. Generally, the length of the intermediate pipe should be 3 to 4 times the diameter of the fan outlet. If the interface size of the selected silencer differs from that of the fan outlet, reducing or expanding transition pipes can be added before and after the silencer. The silencer’s interface size must be larger than the fan outlet’s interface size.

3. Noise radiated from the muffler housing or piping may propagate into the rear end of the muffler, thereby reducing its sound attenuation performance. If necessary, sound insulation treatment can be applied to the muffler housing or certain sections of the piping. At the connection between the muffler flange and the flange in France, an elastic gasket should be added, and careful attention should be paid to sealing to prevent leaks and minimize vibration transmission caused by rigid connections.
